Flagship Ventures is taking aim at the fields of nutrition and intracellular therapy through two new start-ups it has created: Essentient Inc. and Permeon Biologics Inc.

The firm formed them through its VentureLabs effort, in which it works with experts in biological and physical sciences to target new markets.
